Are you seriously considering it?!
Are you sure that's your last option? Now I'm not talking about those in Domestic Violence Situations...you sure need to step out of that 'danger zone'! I'm referring to couples who have not had a complete day without coming at each other, who just can't just agree to disagree, who are having a hard time forgiving each other.
In this my 'small' years in marriage, I have realized that in one sentence, "It is completely human to err, and divine to forgive". PLEASE, LET ME JUST EMPHASIZE AGAIN THAT I AM NOT REFERRING TO THOSE IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SITUATION. YOUR SPOUSE, THE BEATER NEEDS TO GO AND SEEK HELP. THANK YOU.
Before you pick that pen to sign those papers, just think deeply about the following:
- The emotional, social and financial drain it will have on you. Men find it harder to adjust emotionally after a divorce.
- Child custody battle. Which parent gets to stay with the children and who gets to visit.
- Raising children as a single parent. This is not easy. God had a reason for creating that 'mummy' and 'daddy' role.
- Loneliness can kill. You will be so lonely, you might end up doing stupid things you never imagined you would ever do.
- The psychological effect it will have on your child or children. Some children start developing academic problems, bed-wetting issues, social interaction problems, even suicidal ideation.
- The stigma of being a 'Divorcee'. For the women it's even worse. It will be hard for men to take you seriously and if care is not taken, you will unknowingly become a serial divorcee. Our Nigerian society generally frowns at 'Divorce'.
- Your personal assets you have to split.
- The cost of paying a lawyer.
I don't remember anywhere it was said that Marriage was easy. If you are seriously considering it, it just shows that you are not only a 'Quitter' but that you lack the ability to solve problems.
A true test of a marriage comes when couples are able to solve those major problems in their marriages.
